Marissa LaMadrid, Ph.D.
Principal Scientist

Dr. LaMadrid brings over 20 years of exceptionally broad-based expertise in the areas of molecular biotechnology (including stem cell research), genomics, microbiology, condensed matter physics, biophysics, software engineering, and bioinformatics.

Dr. LaMadrid began her professional career as a Research Fellow and Sr. Research Fellow working on projects involving the thermodynamics of thin films and surfaces in the Condensed Matter Physics and Applied Physics departments at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA.

Following her work at Caltech, Dr. LaMadrid was appointed as a Sr. Fellow for the Physiology and Biophysics Department at the University of Washington. As part of her fellowship she performed in vitro assays to study the behavior of skeletal and cardiac muscle at the molecular level. The study results enabled researchers to more quickly identify the effectiveness of drug candidates to treat cardiac diseases such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a leading cause of death in young athletes.

Subsequent to her work in the Physiology and Biophysics Department, Dr. LaMadrid continued
her Sr. Fellowship at the University of Washington
in the Genome Sciences Department (previously

Department of Molecular Biotechnology). In this capacity, Dr. LaMadrid was awarded a fellowship by the National Institute of Health's National Human Genome Research Institute (NIH/NHGRI) to participate in an interdisciplinary grant to perform research in genomics. Dr. LaMadrid significantly contributed to the NIH/NHGRI efforts by creating complex statistical models using speech recognition algorithms for use in sequence analysis.

Following her Sr. Fellowship, Dr. LaMadrid accepted positions as a Research Consultant and Statistical Consultant with the Microbiology Department at the University of Washington and with Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, respectively.

Most recently, Dr. LaMadrid served as Principal Research Engineer for Cellcyte Genetics. In that capacity, she conducted bioinformatic searches for stem cell binding proteins and performed in vitro assays to study binding behavior of stem cell trafficking molecules.

Dr. LaMadrid has authored or co-authored 18 publications on a broad range of topics spanning physics and biology. Dr. LaMadrid received a B.S. in Physics, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines and both an M.S. and Ph.D in Physics from the University of Illinois.
